The Current Scope

Skilled trades sector: Two construction workers assessing a construction site for a new project.

The Conference Board of Canada estimates that Ontario will face a shortage of 190,000 skilled workers by 2020. The shortage is projected to nearly triple to approximately 560,000 vacancies in 2030. While COVID-19 has slowed down the economy temporarily, continued government investments in infrastructure projects will help balance the initial impact of lowered consumer confidence and get us back on track.

The demand for talent will continue to outpace the current supply of skilled workers. The Career Foundation is invested in supporting employers to strengthen their workforce and we are already making a difference through our trades and pre-apprenticeship programs. Additionally, our Made In The Trades resource site educates young people about the benefits of pursuing careers in the skilled trades and how to get started.
