The Current Scope

Frontline healthcare providers have become the superheroes of our time, and deservedly so. They have made tremendous personal sacrifices to protect public health and they have done everything possible to flatten the COVID-19 curve. We celebrate them!

A health sector worker speaking to a patient

While it is well documented that frontline healthcare workers were overwhelmed by the immediate impact of COVID-19, the health sector itself is made up of many other specialties including everything from emergency care to elective surgeries, health facilities operations, health information systems, mental health supports, and physiotherapy. Depending on the role each of the specialties plays in helping to diagnose and care for people affected by COVID-19, healthcare workers are disproportionally in demand while others are facing furloughs and temporary layoffs.

While there may be shifts in how healthcare is delivered in the future, the demand for quality healthcare will return to ‘normal’ very quickly. With unprecedented medical advancements, a growing and aging population, and a significant percentage of its workforce ready to retire, the health industry is struggling to keep up with the demands for professional care.  Industry projections indicate that by 2030, the global demand for health workers will rise to 80 million, with a skills shortage of 18 million worldwide.

In anticipation of this need, The Career Foundation seeks to support employers to increase awareness and access to jobs in the field through recruitment, mentoring, and employment placements.
