Inclusive workplaces are built by design, not by c Inclusive workplaces are built by design, not by chance.

As part of our National AccessAbility Week campaign, today we're exploring how accessible design helps create more inclusive physical workplaces.

This National AccessAbility Week, we’re sharing This National AccessAbility Week, we’re sharing a story of growth, perseverance, and inclusive employment in action.

Before joining the Empowering Abilities Program, Michael faced ongoing barriers in his employment journey due to a learning disability. With limited work experience and difficulty securing long-term employment, he was looking for an opportunity to build both his skills and confidence.

Through 12 weeks of pre-employment training, personalized support, and ongoing guidance from the EAP team, Michael strengthened key workplace skills including communication, adaptability, and teamwork. More importantly, he rebuilt his confidence and developed the tools needed to navigate the job market successfully.

Through the Empowering Abilities Program, an Occupational Therapist conducted an accommodation assessment and visited Michael’s work site. Working with the employer, the Occupational Therapist recommended several no-cost workplace adjustments that supported Michael in being successful and confident in his role.

Today, Michael is employed as a Café Team Member at Colours Cafe, where he continues to gain valuable experience in a supportive and inclusive work environment.

Michael’s journey is a reminder that when individuals have access to the right support, accommodations, and opportunities, barriers to employment can be reduced and meaningful career pathways can become possible.

Real support creates real opportunities — and helps remove barriers to employment.
